Amazing Grace!

We live in a world of revenge and retribution; an eye for an eye; pay what you owe me or else. The world does not know about grace. And yet…

The world sings about grace – “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me” was a popular song a few decades ago; catchy tune, nice words and all that.

“What’s So Amazing About Grace?” is the title of one of Philip Yancy’s books. In a teaching DVD, Loue Giglio called God’s grace “furious grace”.

Amazing grace! Furious grace! Scandalous grace? God’s grace! What is grace?

Grace put an innocent man on a cross to die for the guilty. Grace declares you not guilty when you are as guilty as hell, because someone paid the debt for you. Grace covers all your unrighteousness with a spotless robe that cost a man His place with the Father in heaven for 33 years of hell on earth, tempted and tested like no other man!

Grace picks you up out of the dirt, holds you and covers you with kisses when you have just spat in His face. Grace lavishes blessing on you when you least deserve it; when you’ve yelled at your wife, threatened your children or kicked the dog because you’re in a bad mood.

Grace invites you to come home; to sit on Daddy’s lap; to hear Him whisper that He loves you; that you are His beloved son, His beloved daughter; that you’re okay; that you can always come back, no matter how far you try to run from Him.

Grace changes your heart. Grace exchanges your sorrow for joy; your pain for peace; your bitterness for blessing, your greed for generosity; and your selfishness for sacrificial service.

Grace offers you rest. You don’t have to try. God’s doesn’t need anything, not even your best efforts. He’s already done it all. He’s suffered it all. He’s paid it all. He’s opened the way. He’s torn the curtain. He’s moved the obstacles. He’s shed the blood. He’s forgiven the sin. He’s cleansed the filth away. It’s all over.

“The law was given through Moses. Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ…We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, full of grace the truth.” John 1:17; 14b (NIV).

The amazing thing about grace is that it frees us to be gracious!
