Missionaries At Home

I don’t think any of us question the responsibility we have of taking the message of Jesus to the world. Missionaries are not only those who leave home and go to foreign lands, learning new languages and living with people who live and think differently from ourselves. They are also those who share the message with those here at home.

God sends some far away and others remain at home, but we all have the same calling. Jesus said, “You will be my witnesses.” That means at home, in the office, business or profession in which we work as well as in our social lives in the community.

What is our function as “missionaries” here at home?

Paul gives us the answer in 2 Corinthians 5:18-20.

“All this is from God who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”

There is gentleness and compassion in this message, not the “turn or burn” or “draai of braai” scary warning we sometimes see on bumper stickers. The wonder of God’s love is that He does not count men’s sins against them but forgives when they turn to Him.

Jesus does not want us to shock, scare or shame people into the kingdom. He wants us to woo them to the Lover of their souls. He is not interested in slavish loyalty. He wants the passionate love of the Bride for her Bridegroom.

He also does not want us to share our faith out of guilt. The wonder of this life is that He has given us His Spirit to lead us. What if we simply said, every morning, “Lord, I am your ambassador. Bring the people across my path who are longing to know you and show me who they are. I will tell them that you are not mad with them and that you want to reconcile them to yourself.”

Then watch what happens. If you sincerely want to be His mouthpiece, you will be surprised at the way He uses you to tell people about His love and mercy.

Most people don’t need to be told how bad they are. Deep down, they probably know although they won’t admit it. What they do need to know is that God had already paid for their sin. They owe Him nothing. They are wayward sons and daughters that are free to go home to Father.
