“Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour” 1 Peter 5:8 (NIV).
I am amazed at number of spiritual lessons I learn from the natural world.
A pride of lions was trying to take down a giraffe. The wily giraffe kept them at bay with his powerful hind legs. The lions backed off, but one of the big males began to drive the giraffe towards the river. In its panic it dashed into the water and slipped on the rocks, landing on a rocky bed in the shallow stream.
There was no reason for the giraffe to die but, in its terror, it could not get to its feet. Finally, exhausted, its head slipped under the water; it gave up the fight and drowned while the lion pride simply watched and waited for the inevitable.
Had the giraffe stood its ground and used its feet, it could have withstood the lion attack and driven them off. It had the weapons, but it was fear that killed it, not the lions.
Is that not so like us? When his frontal attack fails, Satan begins to roar his accusations at us, lying about our standing before God because of things we might have done or not done. Instead of standing our ground with our armour in place – truth, righteousness, salvation. peace, and faith, and using the trusty sword of His Word – we flee in fear and fall on the slippery rocks of doubt or unbelief.
Here is a simple strategy for sending the devil packing. It’s the strategy Jesus used with great effect when He was being pushed and prodded by Satan in the wilderness. When he tried to lure Him into doing what God had not told Him to do, Jesus told him, “Daddy didn’t tell me to do that!” and “Daddy didn’t say that!”
Of course, you can’t say that unless you know what Daddy told you to do and what Daddy said in His word.
We have no excuse for our ignorance except our laziness to get God’s word inside us. God said, “…My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.” Hosea 4:6 (NIV).
Our church offers many opportunities to learn God’s word and to be equipped to stand against the enemy’s wiles. If we are vulnerable because of our ignorance, we only have ourselves to blame.
