Death Is Victory

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” Psalm 116:15

This statement seems out of place in a psalm full of praise to God for answering the psalmist’s prayers and rescuing him from death.

My reaction to this verse is, “God, how can you say that?” People struggle not to die. We want to remain in this life as long as possible. We have so much to do. We have love-ties to family and friends. Death is so final, so cruel, separating loved ones and leaving heartache and loss.  How can God be okay with that?

When sorrow or suffering hits, our first thought is “Why?” We desperately need to make sense of suffering to make it easier to bear.  It is important to us to have some sort of explanation to help us get through it somehow.

Of course it all depends on our perspective. I think that we forget that life as it is on this planet is only temporary. We are sojourners on the way to a permanent and perfect future. We came into this life one by one and we will leave it one at a time. Of course that will be a wrench for a while but, although “weeping may remain for a night, rejoicing comes in the morning.” (Psalm 30:5).

But let’s look at from God’s point of view. Our life on earth as it is now is only temporary and an apprenticeship we are serving to prepare us for eternal life in His kingdom. Every person who steps over into His presence is a trophy for Jesus and a triumph of God’s grace. Why shouldn’t He regard our death as something “precious” to Him? His passion is for us to be with Him forever, perfected through Jesus as sons and daughters in His forever family.

We have to navigate a tortuous life in a treacherous world of chaos, confusion and deception under Satan’s influence and our only hope is to keep trusting God and learning to live in Him and through Him by the Holy Spirit. If we steadfastly follow Jesus and imitate Him in the way we live, there is no doubt that God will celebrate His victory and ours with great joy when we step out of these temporary tents and this decaying world into our eternal, indestructible life with Him.

The final phase will be completed when Jesus returns to claim His prize, not only His people restored to wholeness in body, soul and spirit but also all creation, corrupted by sin but reclaimed through the cross to be man’s perfect dwelling place.
