How Great Is Our God!

Qatar is a land of contrasts. As I rode through the streets of the city on the night of my arrival, and marvelled at the sights of progress, wealth and affluence, the Holy Spirit whispered a verse of Scripture in my heart. “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world – the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting or what he has and does – comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away but the man who does the will of God lives forever.” 1 John 2:15 -17.

It is easy to develop an appetite for the things of the world when everything around you speaks of all the luxury and pleasure that money can buy. In an atmosphere like that I needed to cling to God’s word that reminded me that all these shining trinkets are part of a world system that is transient and will not last. It was great to enjoy the sights and sounds, to shop in places where choices are limitless, but in the end, none of it will last. Only the kingdom of God and the treasures of that kingdom are eternal and to that we must cling when we are pulled by the world and its pleasures.

Outside of the city the desert reigns supreme. One of our trips was to the sand dunes in the south on the shore of the Inland Sea near the Saudi Arabian border. The “beach” stretches as far as the eyes can see. Once again the Holy Spirit whispered a Scripture in my heart. “How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them. Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.” Psalm 139:17, 18.

How is it possible to take in a Scripture like that? Where I was at that moment was only a minute portion of the sand dunes of the earth. Imagine all the grains of sand in all the vast deserts as well as on every square inch of the earth that cannot be counted, and yet David could say that God’s thoughts towards him outnumber all that.

How great is our God and how great is His love for us!
