Show Us The Father

SHOW US THE FATHER

There’s a thought that has been going around in my head for some time.

When Satan rebelled against God, he was evicted from God’s presence and cast down to the earth with his angelic supporters. He created chaos on the earth because he is the prince of darkness. God created man and placed him in this hostile environment, populated by demonic spirits, to teach him to love and trust Him and to govern the earth for Him in preparation for his eternal role in the kingdom of God.

Long before Jesus ever appeared on earth in person He was here in the unseen realm, directing human history and revealing Himself from time to time to different individuals and to the nation of Israel which He had chosen to be His own people.

God is spirit. He was looking for a people who would be willing to be His body on the earth so that He could show the rest of the world just how great His love is for all people.

Tragically, they just didn’t get it. For at least 1500 years, God, the second person of the Trinity, had come to them over and over again, had spoken to them through the prophets, had intervened with many miracles of deliverance and provision, had pleaded with them to return and eventually had to send them away from their land because they refused to listen to Him.

Jesus was always here in the unseen realm but He eventually came in the flesh to be with us and to show us what the Father is really like because the devil had misrepresented and distorted even His own people’s understanding of God. They thought He was some demanding tyrant who was waiting to catch them out for every little thing they did wrong. They could not relate to a God like that, so most  them either went their own way or made up their own rules to try to satisfy this God.

Just before His death Jesus spend some special time with His disciples in the Upper Room. He assured them that He had to go away but He would come back to take them to the Father. In response to Philip’s request, “Show us the Father”, Jesus replied, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.”

Adam messed up by swallowing Satan’s lies and turning traitor to God’s love so that he became a prodigal son. Jesus, the last Adam, lived the human life of a perfect son, died as a traitor to that love, and won the right to take us back into the heart of the Father to be His sons again. And that’s why He came, to show us the Father.
