“Have faith in God.”
What is “faith in God”?
On His way into Jerusalem one morning, Jesus was hungry. He spied a fig tree and poked among the leaves for a ripe fig but found….nothing! In an outburst of disappointment He blurted out, “May no-one ever eat fruit from you again!” Passing that way the next day, His disciples were struck by something strange. The same fig tree that was alive and green the previous day, was now dry, bare and dead. They marvelled. What on earth had happened? Jesus’ words had produced a result within 24 hours.
Jesus used the unusual occurrence to teach them a lesson about faith. “Have faith in God” can also read, “Have the God-kind of faith.” Buried in this story is a principle about the God-kind of faith that will set us on a new road of discovery and power.
Faith is a kind of “telephone” line linking us who live and function in the natural and physical world to God who lives in the unseen dimension of the spiritual and eternal. In the same way as words and pictures can travel through the unseen realm through waves of sound and light and turn up in our living rooms on a TV screen as words and pictures, so words travel along the faith “lines” between heaven and earth and turn up as “miracles”.
Have you noticed how often Jesus said something and it happened? When the centurion came begging Him to heal his servant, he said to Jesus, “Just say the word and my servant will be healed.” Jesus marvelled at a pagan’s understanding of faith. He spoke a word and the servant was healed as the centurion believed. Lazarus came out of the grave at Jesus’ call. Jairus’ daughter got up from death when Jesus spoke to her.
The God-kind of faith is “calling those things that are not as though they were.” (Romans 4:17). God speaks and His words come down to us through the “faith-line”. We speak what God has spoken, and God’s words create what God has said. That’s the God-kind of faith.
