A Walk Through The Bible – Old Testament – Lesson 1

  1. The Bible – a divine/human book.

The Bible was written by people in their language about people who lived in a certain place, at a certain time and in a certain way. In order to understand what it is saying, we must interpret it from their language and culture otherwise it does not make sense.

It is the written, divinely inspired record of God’s involvement with human beings, showing us His nature and His ways by what He said and by the way He interacted with people.

It is the also story of human beings and how they responded to God’s revelation of Himself.

It is not a history book, yet is contains accurate historical records.

It is not a book of science, yet it is scientifically accurate and reveals scientific fact long before humans made the discoveries.

It contains many different types of literature written over a period of about 2000 years and yet it is one story.

The Bible is progressive revelation – God revealing Himself bit by bit as people were able to understand and respond;

And selective history – God traces the history of a nation born out of one man, Abraham.  He sets aside the other nations that came from Abraham and his offspring and follows the line of Isaac and Jacob through to Messiah.

The Bible gives many answers to what the human race cannot figure out for themselves outside of the Bible e.g., the origin of the universe, the origin of man, sin, the purpose of man, the end of all things etc.

No other religious book can claim and substantiate the claim that the origin of their religious writings is divine.  No-one, even the most sublime person, can create a God as holy, loving, good and completely different from human beings as the God of the Bible, in a book written over two millennia by 40+ authors.  The Bible is a miracle.

Prophecy is the Bible’s trump card.  Only God can accurately predict history before it happens and pull it off! No other religious book presents prophetic accuracy like the Bible does.

  1. The Bible – a Hebrew book

We will never understand the message of God until we understand the cradle in which it was born, i.e., the language and culture in which it happened and was written.  If we impose our own interpretation on the Scriptures, we will come up with error.

In order to understand the meaning and significance of the text we have to learn to think like Hebrews. This doesn’t mean we have to become Jews or practice their culture. It means that we have to learn to understand the major concepts as they did in order to put the correct interpretation on them.

It also means that we need to understand God’s overall plan so that each piece fits into it instead of being a disjointed series of events.
