Chapter Ten – We Are Transformed

Trusting in Jesus as our Saviour and Lord is only the beginning of our journey with Him. We are not saved only so that we can go to heaven. We are saved so that we can take part in God’s plan to rescue and restore the whole universe to be as perfect as it was when He created it. Part of His plan, through Jesus, is to change us little by little until we become just like His Son.

How does this happen?

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2.

We have some work to do as well. When we were born again and made alive by the Spirit of God, He did not automatically change the way we think so that we began to think like God. We still think like the world thinks until we learn to think like God.

How does this happen? Just as a sacrifice is an exchange, so also we have to change the wrong thoughts in our minds by exchanging them for God’s thoughts.

How can we find God’s thoughts?

  1. By studying His word.

Paul called it “being transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

We replace our old false ways of thinking when we read, study, meditate on, believe and put God’s word into practice. This will not happen overnight or even in a lifetime. We need to use our everyday experiences, good and bad, to think about and apply God’s word so that we can be transformed little by little.

  1. By gazing at Jesus.

How can we gaze at Jesus? Again we find the picture of Jesus painted for us in words in the New Testament and especially in the gospels. The more we read about Jesus and the more we walk with Him through His word, the more like Him we become as we imitate Him by learning to think and act like He did.

A disciple is a follow of Jesus. A follower is one who listens, learns, copies and obeys his master. Jesus calls us to be His disciples.

  1. By trusting the Father.

In everything that happens in our lives, good or bad, we must learn to trust God, that He will turn it into good for us because He is using all our circumstances to make us like Jesus.

“And we know that, in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose. For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son.” Romans 8:28, 29

I said that we have work to do. God has done everything He can for us BECAUSE OF HIS MERCY. Now we are given the opportunity to work with Him to change our minds and our behaviour. We become what we think. We are God’s dearly-loved children but, through the renewing of our minds to think God’s thoughts, we must become what we already are.
