Chapter Three – He Reconciled Us

Because we were born in sin, we were not only living under the control of our selfish and greedy natures in the dominion of darkness, and slaves to our sinful nature, we were also God’s enemies.

We were separated from God, unable to come to Him because of the huge barrier of sin between us and Him. We were afraid of God and hostile to Him. We could not love and honour Him and we didn’t want to because we hated Him.

We didn’t know Him; we didn’t understand Him. The devil deceived us into believing that God was looking for every reason to punish us and that one day He would “get” us and send us to hell and enjoy doing it. We did not know or realise that He loved us so much that He sent His Son to show us and tell us what He is really like.

Jesus came to earth as a human being to invite us to come back into God’s family as His dearly loved sons and daughters. He died to take our sin out of the way so that we can approach God with confidence as our Father and not be afraid of Him any more.

He reconciled us to the Father through His blood.

“Remember that at one time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus, you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.” Ephesians 2:12, 13.

“All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ…God in Christ was reconciling the word to Himself, not counting men’s sins against them.” 2 Corinthians 5:18a, 19a.

We could do nothing about our enmity towards God. It was part of the nature we were born with but, BECAUSE OF GOD’S MERCY, He stepped in and did for us what we could not do for ourselves. He reconciled us to Himself through the death of His Son so that we are no longer His enemies but His dearly loved children.

“For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life.” Romans 5:10.
